The Nahargarh Fort is located on the sheer rugged parapet of Aravali Hills forming an impressive northern decor of Jaipur. The Nahargarh Fort, also known as the Tiger Fort was strategically exigent and was built as a means of cushioning Amer. The older parts of the fort succumbed to the blitzkrieg of time but the newer additions are simply mind blowing.
The Haunting Legend
According to the folk lore, the Fort was named after a dead Rathore prince, Nahar Singh, whose spirit used to haunt the site and would cause roguery, so as to delay the construction of the fort. After too many agitations, a Tantrik prayer was arranged to the spirit, which agreed to leave on the condition that the fort should be named after him. Later a shrine was also added where the warrior could be worshiped.
The Monsoon Palace
The Nahargarh fort reigns the wide skyline during the day and frames a mesmerizing site when floodlit at night. Maharajah Sawai Madho Singh, always wanted to have a pleasure retreat, beside his popular duck shooting arena at Jal Mahal. So in 1880, he bade the eminent Bengali architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya to design a magnificent monsoon haven for his nine maharanis, and today it stands- with its past legends and present glory- as a splendid example of love in the hearts of people. The Madhavendra Bhawan, has a cluster of 12 identical double story suits for queens and at the acme is a regal suit for the king himself. The rooms are linked by voluminous interspersed corridors and rectangular windows displaying some delicate frescoes; western-styled toilets and designed kitchen hearths take one's memories to the rustic countrysides of England. Think about the clandestine hide and seek games that were being played across these courtyards on full-moon nights, queens strolling in their respective balconies, waiting for the same king to come.
