Delhi


Delhi has a rich history and thus has several historical monuments. Delhi was made the seat of power by many dynasties that have also constructed some magnificent monuments during their reign. Historical places worth seeing in Delhi are the Qutub Complex, Humayun's Tomb, Red Fort, Lodi Garden, Tughlaqabad etc.

Qutub complex comprises of Qutub Minar, Quwutawal Islam Mosque, Tomb of Illtutmish, Madrasa, Alai Darwaja and Alai Minar. This complex is one of the World Heritage Sites. The entire complex was constructed on the debris of 27 Jaina and Hindu temples. Qutub Minar was constructed by Qutubuddin Aibak in 1199 and was completed by Illtutmish in 13th century. It was built as muezzin for the mosque. It is 230 feet in height and tapers from 15 meter in diameter at the base to 2.5 meter at the top. It has 5 storeys each with a different design and a projecting balcony. The first three storeys are made only of sandstone while the fourth and fifth are made of sandstone and marble.

Humayun's Tomb is one of the historical sites in Delhi. The Persian wife of Humayun, Haji Begum, constructed it in 1565 AD. It is made of sandstone and marble. The tomb is built over a huge platform. It is situated in the middle of a garden, which is criss-crossed by channels of water. It is also a World Heritage Site. It is considered the precursor of Taj Mahal in Agra.

Red Fort is an important historical site belonging to the Mughal era. It was constructed by Shahjahan when he built the new city of Shahjahanabad. The main entrance opens in Chatta chowk, which was a covered shopping place for ladies popularly known as Meena Bazaar. Other attractions of this historical monument are Naubat Khana or Drum House, Diwan-i-Aam or the Hall of Public Audience, Diwan-i-Khas or Hall of Private Audience, the Hammams or Royal Bath and Rang Mahal or Palace of Colours housing the wives and mistresses of the emperor.

Tughlaqabad is a historical place and the third city of Delhi. Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq founded Tughlaqabad in 1320. The city comprises of a fort and the tomb of Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq. The fort is famous for its defensive architectural features like slanting walls, ramparts, bastions, battlements, zigzag passageway etc. a causeway from the southern side of the fort takes across to the tomb of Ghiyasuddin, which was earlier surrounded by a lake. Agra

Agra has many historical places to offer to the tourists. Agra was the capital of the Lodis and later of the Mughals till Shahjahan shifted his capital to Shahjahanabad. The places of historical interests in Agra are Fatehpur Sikri, Red Fort, Sikandra, Tomb of Itmad-ud-daula and Taj Mahal. Fatehpur Sikri, Red Fort and Taj Mahal are the World Heritage Sites.
Taj Mahal is the most popular place amongst tourists. Shahjahan constructed it for his beloved wife Mumtaj from 1630 to 1653. It is made of pure white marble with beautiful inlay work of precious stones known as Pietra Dura. It
Fatehpur Sikri was built by Akbar between 1570 and 1586. It is made of red sandstone and in the vicinity of the dargah of Saint Salim Chisti and the mosque. The eastern entrance to the mosque is known as Bulund Darwaza, which was erected after the conquest of Gujarat. It is the highest gateway in India. The fort is famous for Diwan-I-Aam, Diwan-I-Khas and Panch Mahal. It was abandoned soon because of lack of water.

Akbar started Red Fort of Agra in 1565 as a military establishment of mud and bricks. Several additions were made by Jahangir and Shahjahan during their respective reigns. The fort is 2.5km long with 20ft high walls and a deep moat. The places of historical interest are Jahangir Mahal, Khas Mahal, Diwan-I-Khas and Diwan-I-Aam and Pearl Mosque.

Varanasi

Varanasi is 700km from Delhi and is situated on the bank of river Ganga. Varanasi has several well-built ghats. The historical places to visit in Varanasi are Alamgir mosque, Durga temple, Vishwanath temple, Bharat Mata temple, Tulsi Manas temple, Banaras Hindu University and an Archaeological Museum. Mathura

Amritsar

Golden Temple is a pilgrimage center for the Sikhs. It was made of white marble and inlaid copper work, which was covered by gold plate. That is why it is called Golden temple. It was started by 4th Sikh Guru Ram Dev and completed by his successor Guru Arjan Dev.

Jallianwala Bagh is famous for Martyr's Memorial in the memory of the people who died in an open firing by General Dyer on April13, 1919.
Summer place of Maharaja Ranjit Singh is situated amidst the garden called Ram Bagh. This garden is laid out on the pattern of Shalimar Bagh at Lahore. A museum named after Maharaja Ranjit Singh is setup here, which displays miniatures, coins, weapons and the replica of most famous diamond Kohinoor.
