Rumtek Monastery

24-km southwest of Gangtok, is the headquarters of the Kagyupa (Black Hat) sect. One of the oldest Tibetan Buddhist sects, and the seat of its head, the Gyalwa Karmapa.

The 16th Karmapa fled Tibet in 1959 after the Chinese in vasion, and built a replica here of his monastery at Tsurphu in Tibet. Rumtek is an impressive complex, its flat-roofed buildings topped with golden finials, and filled with treasures brought from the monastery in Tibet. Especially splendid is the reliquary Chorten of the 16th Karmapa, behind the main prayer hall, made of silver and gold and studded with enormous corals, amber and turquoise. Since the 16th Karmapa's death in 1981, however, there has been two claimants to his title (and the monastery's legendary treasures), including one whom dramatically escaped from Tibet into India in 2000.

DO DRUL CHORTEN (STUPA):- The Do Drul Chorten or Stupa was built by the venerable Trushi Rimpoche, head of the Nyingmaorder of Tibetan Buddhism in 1945. Inside the Stupa there are complete mandala sets of Dorjee Phurba( Bajra Kilaya) a set of Kan- Gyur relics( holy books) complete 'Zung'(mantras) and other religion objects. Around this Chorten which is one of the most important Stupas in Sikkim, are 108 Mani- Lhakor( prayer Wheels). These prayer wheels are turned by the devout Buddhist while chanting. Hail to the Jewel in the Lotus", to invoke the Buddhisattva. The Chorten is surrounded by Chorten Lakhang and Guru Lhakhang, where there are two huge statues of Guru Rimpoche( Guru Padmasambhava).

ENCHEY MONASTERY:- An important seat of the Nyingma order , the Enchey Monastery is built on the site blessed by Lama Druptob karpo, a tantric master known for his power of flying. This 200 –year-old monastery has in its premises images of gods, goddesses and   other religious objects.

SIKKIM RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF TIBETOLOGY:- The most prestigious of its kind in India. This Buddhist Institute is a treasure trove of vast collection of rare Lepcha , Tibetan and Sanskrit manuscript, statues and rare Thankas ( Tapestries used in Buddhist Liturgy) and has over 200 Buddhist icons and other prized objects of art.Today , it is a renowned worldwide center of study of Buddhist Philosophy and religion.

DIRECTOR OF HANDICRAFTS( COTTAGE INDUSTRY):- Instituted with the aim of promoting and keeping alive the state's traditional arts and crafts , the directorate of Handicraft and Handloom is a store house of handwoven woolen carpets with traditional motifs, blankets, shawls in Lepcha weaves and exquisitely – carved 'choktse' or table and many other gift items.

Morning after breakfast, drive to Kalimpong – 80 Kms – 3 hours drive.

Kalimpong was once part of Sikkimese and then Bhutanese territory, before it became part of British India in the 19th century. It was at the head of the ancient trade route to Tibet and still has the feel of a frontier town. Its market sells a mix of the exotic and the mundane, from fern shoots to plastic buckets. Memories of the Raj are recalled by the charming stone cottages and the quaint ambience of the Himalayan Hotel, once a family home. The Thongsa Monastery is Kalimpong's oldest monastery. It was built in 1692, and is a brisk hour's walk above the town.

Temperature and Best Season

The best time to visit the north is between October and March; temperatures are pleasant, the days dry and sunny. From December through to mid-January early morning fog in and around Delhi can disrupt travel plans with flights often delayed or sometimes cancelled. Night temperatures in Rajasthan and the plains often reach freezing point during the winter and it can be chilly before sunrise. April through to August is hot. Early summer is good for wildlife viewing, the parks are free of visitors, vegetation is dry and game easily spotted.
